What to do with those jalapenos and corn on the cob?

Sal + Pepper
1/2 c butter, softened
1 jalapeno, seeded + minced
1 small garlic clove, pressed

Helpful Tips

Are the fruitflies driving you crazy?

1. take a ramekin or small shallow dish
2. put half inch of apple cider vinegar
3. add a couple of drops of dish soap and swirl it a few times
4. set it near the spot where they are hanging out and they will drop like flies (pun intended)

Mean Plan

If you are having food wasted before you eat it, here is something I have learned. As soon as the basket comes, I menu plan. I lay everything out on the kitchen counter, cut things up, organize in containers, and then match the produce to what's in my pantry. So here's an example of my menu for this week:

Mon: BBQ chicken, veggie medley, baked potatoes

Tues: Cucumber sandwiches, pasta (husk tomatoes, cucumber) salad, fruit

Wed: Eggplant Parmesan and Fried Okra

Thurs: Ground Beef Tacos with fresh salsa

Fri: Ground turkey w/ squash, zucchini, tomatoes on penne w EVOO/garlic sauce

Sat: Chicken Teriyaki w rice and purple/white beans

Sunday: Omelets w tomato, mushrooms, onion

All items in orange are from Leaping Waters Farm.

All Those Colors:
Some of you are asking me about the colors. If it looks like a potato, it's a potato. If it looks like a tomato, it's a tomato. If it looks like a green bean, it's a green bean. And remember you can "google image" any of the veggies if you type in a description.

Also....... have you guessed Sarah's favorite color by the veggies you are getting? :)

Recipes... Finally!

So I finally found my camera charger and am able to load all my pictures again. Sorry for the delay in recipes, but I have quite a few to give you over the next week.

First Up:

Veggie Medley

Chop up whatever veggies you have. I used...
Broccoli
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Purple Beans
Onion
Beans
Flower Looking Squash (anyone know their name?)

I then added soy sauce and sauteed until just softened. These veggies cook quickly so don't leave the stove while they are cooking or they can get slimy.

I served this with rice and grilled chicken.

What are those things?

I've had some inquiries about the paper covered yellow "thingies" as you all seemed to be calling them. They are HUSK tomatoes. Just peel and eat. Treat it like a cherry tomato. So they are great in pasta salad!

Leaping Waters Farm Family Dinner

MENU:
Ancient White Park tenderloins
garden fresh cucumber
purple cabbage coleslaw
smashed warm herb new potato salad
rolls (from the freezer-NO THEY ARE NOT HOMEMADE!)
instructions:

Send 4 and 6 year old cheap labor to garden collect herbs. They are remarkably well trained at this point and come back with the following herbs: mint, purple basil, chives ,sage ,thyme and parsley.

While your husband and son are working on hay you are going to put this together. Unfortunately 14 yo daughter is getting a much needed break with friends in Roanoke so you are going to have to do it all AND do the dishes too.

4and 6 yo sort out their herbs and amazingly have done it right. You are very proud !!!

Boil the new potatoes which you dug up earlier. Remeber never to let your 6yo use the shovel again as she hit you in the head with it by accident.

meat was set out to defrost earlier

crazy Janes is only thing you use on meat

dressing for coleslaw is sour cream1/4 cupp, mayo 1/2 cup 2 tbsp cider vinegar salt and pepper and 2 tsp sugar.ok to mix together in advance

cucumbers so good they need nothing

Let your small children learn how to use sharp knives at a young age. It will pay off.

ingredients for potato vinaigrette are in photo- no measurements sorry...just add some of each til it tastes good- chop herbs up fine and smash it all together

Heat your rolls

light the charcoal fire 3 x as your husband and son are delayed so long in hayfield
and somehow still manage to keep the steaks med rare

Light some candles
YOU ARE SET!!!!

Maybe you need to cook him some so he is motivated to take better care around them!

PEONIES AND POTATOES

my favourite blooms right now- peonies and potatoes!!
Peonies because they are so fragrant
and Potatoes because that means there are little tasty potatoes under the plants already!!
Jeanna did such a great job with our potato patch this year that we will have potatoes for the party next week and then for the CSA. We weren't sure if the seed potatoes kept from last year that had sprouted in the basement would work but they did!!!!
